PHILADELPHIA -- A basket with one second left gave host Chestnut Hill a 78-77 victory over Caldwell in a battle of two of the top women's basketball squads in the CACC on Saturday at Sorgenti Arena.
With the score tied at 76, Avery White's jumper bounced around the rim and in with one second left to give the Griffins (10-10, 6-2 CACC) a two-point lead. After a Caldwell time out, junior forward
Lucy Coogan was fouled on a shot attempt as time expired. She made the first free throw but the second fell off the rim.
After trailing for most of the first three quarters, Caldwell took its first lead of the game, 62-60, with 0:38 left in the third before settling for a 62-62 tie entering the fourth. Coogan's layup with 3:48 left gave Caldwell (10-8, 4-3) a 76-74 lead with 3:48 left. A CHC basket with 1:48 left tied the game, and each team had two possessions without scoring before the game-winner with a second left.
In all, there were five lead changes and eight ties in the contest.
Sophomore guard Jan'Nel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) had a game-high 23 points for Caldwell, while Coogan posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore guard
Neysa Aguilar pitched in 15 points and a team-best four assists.
The Cougars visit first-place Dominican on Tuesday at 5:30 in Orangeburg, N.Y. in their next action.
