DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) could not be stopped in this one, as he scored 24 points and started a perfect 10-10 on FG attempts, leading Caldwell men's basketball (10-4, 2-1 CACC) to a 89-73 triumph over their rival Georgian Court Lions (2-12, 1-3 CACC) in a CACC matchup at the GCU Wellness Center.
Three other Cougars got into double figures as well, including senior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.), senior point guard
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) and junior point guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.).
Bueno had 18 points and a team-high five assists, Heber scored 13 points with two threes made and Evans scored 10 points with five rebounds and four assists.
CU never trailed in the game. The Cougars exploded for an astounding 51 points in the second half to pull away from GCU. Leading, 60-50, with 11:41 to play, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run over the next two-plus minutes, capped by two free throws and a three pointer by sophomore guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) and another trey by sophomore guard
Jaiden Williams (New York) for a 20-point lead, and GCU would get no closer than the final 16-point margin the rest of the way.
Caldwell's largest lead was 22 multiple times late in the contest.
CU will come back to the Newman Center after a three-game road trip and host the Bridgeport Purple Knights on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
