CALDWELL, N.J. -- Sophomore righthander Brendan Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) and senior righty Elias Negron (Virginia Beach, Va.) were brilliant in eight- and seven-inning outings, respectively, as Caldwell baseball kept its CACC Tournament hopes alive with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican, 7-5 and 9-2, at Kiwanis Oval on Friday.
Junior shortstop Sean Brown (West Orange, N.J.) had four hits and senior DH Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) had four RBI in the twin bill.
In the opener, Scalisi scattered 10 hits over eight innings, permitting just one earned run and fanning five. He was supported by a first-inning, three-run home run by Putney that followed a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Michael Cruz (Miami) for a 4-0 Cougars lead. Caldwell (10-23, 9-14 CACC) increased the lead to 6-0 on RBI by sophomore 2B Stephen Young Jr., in the fourth and sixth. After DU (15-31, 9-15) closed to within 7-5 in the ninth, senior righthander Nikko Matos (Roselle Park, N.J.) came on to record the final out and earn his third save.
In the nightcap, after the visitors took a early 2-0 lead, CU bounced back with a run in the first on a sacrifice fly junior RF Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) and RBI by Putney, sophomore catcher Christopher Bayo (Miami), and junior CF Christian Petino Jr. (Flemington, N.J.) in the third for a 5-2 lead. The Cougars broke it open in the sixth, scoring four more, highlighted by a two-run single by Young. Negron made it stand up, firing a complete-game, four hitter, striking out five.
The Cougars have one more game in the regular season, set for Wednesday vs. Staten Island at Kiwanis Oval. Pending other CACC results, the Cougars may still qualify for the CACC Tournament. Check the Caldwell and CACC websites and social media for updates.
