PHILADELPHIA -- Junior shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) ripped a double to left center field, breaking a 1-1 tie in the ninth inning, and junior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) broke the game open with a two-run double, lifting Caldwell softball to a game two 5-1 victory and doubleheader sweep of CACC foe Chestnut Hill at CHC Softball Field on Monday.
The Cougars used an 11-hit attack to win game one, 9-1, in a game shortened to six innings by the run rule.
In the decisive ninth, with the automatic runner graduate 3B
Riley Riendeau (Lincoln, R.I.) placed at second, freshman CF
Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) beat out an infield single with one out. Tavaska then lifted a high drive to left center that fell near the wall, scoring Riendeau. After senior LF
Chloe Pocceschi (Annandale, N.J.) executed a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Freschi and make it 3-1, Vondracek looped a double down the left field line, scoring Tavaska and Pocceschi.
Senior righthander
Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to get the victory, coming on with two on and one out in the eighth and the winning run on third, inducing a popup and strikeout to get the game to the ninth. The starter, graduate RHP
Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.), was masterful into the eighth inning, allowing six hits and one unearned run, fanning eight.
In the opener, the Cougars broke open a tight game with four in the fifth, a two-run double by Winters, RBI by Freschi on a mishandled grounder keying the inning. Then in the sixth, the Cougars (20-16, 8-8 CACC) extended to 9-1 on a double by freshman catcher
Taylor Quinn (Colonie, N.Y.), who had three hits and three RBI in the game.
The offensive outburst supported the strong pitching of freshman righty
Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.), who scattered eight hits over six innings for her eighth win.
Caldwell hosts Felician in a pivotal CACC doubleheader on Tuesday at Caldwell Athletic Field.
