Tavaska Blasts Two Home Runs, Drives in 10, Vondracek Laces Seven Hit in Softball Sweep of Post

Freschi Laces Five Hits as Cougars Bang out 31 safeties in twin bill

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Junior shortstop Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) blasted two home runs and drove in six runs in game one, and junior 2B Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.) totaled seven hits as Caldwell softball took a twin-bill from Post, 16-1 and 9-0 in CACC action at Caldwell Athletic Field on Tuesday in the league opener for both teams.

Caldwell (9-7, 2-0 CACC) jumped on the visitors early in the opener, Tavaska's three-run home run igniting an eight-run first, capped by Vondracek's two-run single. It was more of the same in the third, when Tavaska's two-run blast made it 11-0. RBI hits from freshman RF Rianna Sparandero (Middletown, N.J.), Vondracek, freshman 1B Amanda Batista (Carteret, N.J.) and Tavaska and a run-scoring grounder by freshman C Taylor Quinn (Colonie, N.Y.) accounted for the five-run fourth and the game ending on the run rule after five.

In the nightcap, a pair of fours was the winning hand for Caldwell - four in the first and four in the sixth, two-run doubles by Tavaska and Martin doing the honors to open the game and a booming three-run double by Martin ending it after six.

Cougars pitching was strong, with graduate RHP Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.) limiting Post (2-12, 0-2) to five hits in a single run in game one, and the tandem of freshman RHP Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) and senior righty Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.) teaming on a five-hit shutout in game two.

Freshman LF Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) had five hits in the two games, including a run-scoring triple.

Vondracek is now hitting .519 on the season, and Tavaska is up to .472 with a 1.34 OPS.

The Cougars visit New Haven in a non-league game on Wednesday.
