WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- The trio of junior 2B
Grace Vondracek (Odessa, N.Y.), junior shortstop
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.), freshman C
Taylor Quinn (Colonie, N.Y.) had five hits each as Caldwell softball swept a pair from New Haven, 14-9 in eight innings an 10-1 in a run-rule shortened five innings on Wednesday at UNH Softball Field.
In the opener, the Cougars trailed, 5-1, after the first inning, but stormed back to take the lead in the third, Vondracek's RBI triple plating freshman CF Mackenzie Nazionale (Ontario, Calif.) to cap the rally and give Caldwell a 7-5 lead. After the hosts tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh to send it to extra innings, the Cougars put it away with six in their half of the extra frame, RBI hits by freshman LF
Brooke Freschi (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) and Vondracek sandwiched around a bases-loaded walk to Nazionale the big plays in the inning.
In the nightcap, the Cougars (11-7) had an easier time with the Chargers (2-10), scoring eight in the first three innings, highlighted by a three-run home run by Tavaska and two-run single by junior
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.). They secured the run-rule win with the first career home run by freshman 3B
Alex Colon (Kearny, N.J.)
Freshman righty
Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) earned victories in both ends of the doubleheader, pitching three innings of one-hit relief, fanning four, in game one and tossing a complete-game six hitter with no walks in the nightcap, to move to 6-2.
Tavaska finished the day with seven RBI, and Vondracek is now hitting a league-best .541.
Caldwell next hosts Franklin Pierce on Friday at 2 p.m. at Caldwell Athletic Field.
