SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Caldwell softball's deep pitching staff turned in another great day as the Cougars took on a tough Saint Leo squad in the latest leg of their Florida Spring trip on Tuesday. This time it was junior righty Alllison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.) stepping up, pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief in Game 1 and getting the start in Game 2, going six strong as CU dropped a pair of tight ones, 3-0 and 2-1 in eight innings.
In the opener, freshman righthander
Katie O'Connor (Charlottesville, Va.) kept it close for the Cougars, battling into the fifth inning, allowing three runs and six hits to the potent Lions. After Winters went the rest of the way, she opened the nightcap, allowing just a run on six hits through six.
Junior SS
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) gave the Cougars an early lead with a first-inning triple, plating junior right fielder
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.), who had singled and had two hits in the game. The Cougars lead held up until a two-out single in the sixth and one-out walk-off hit in the eighth gave the Lions (19-8) the sweep.
CU (2-4) takes on Saint Michael's Wednesday at 9 a.m. and McKendree at 11:15 a.m. in the continuation of THE Spring Games in Winter Haven.
