CALDWELL, N.J.-- Soph guard
Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored 25 points, adding six rebounds, six assists and three steals, and junior backcourt mate
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) notched his 1,000 career point as part of a 13-point effort, helping Caldwell men's basketball to an impressive 80-63 triumph over Post in CACC action on Wednesday at the Newman Center. Evans and Heber were two of five Cougars to reach double digits in points in a wire-to-wire win that kept the Cougars' hopes of a CACC playoff berth -- and even a home game in the Quarterfinals -- alive heading into Saturday's showdown at Bloomfield.
The Cougars scored the game's first seven points, eventually building a 14-point lead that was still at 12 at halftime, bolstered by 12 first-half points by Evans and 10 by junior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.). Caldwell (14-13, 9-6 CACC) would eventually boost its edge to as many as 19 at 44-25 with just under 17:00 to play, before a full-court press and furious rally by Post (18-8, 9-6), ranked No. 3 in the NCAA East Regional poll, pulled the visitors to within five with 7:55 left. But five straight Cougars points on a three pointer by freshman guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) and two free throws by Evans re-established the double-digit lead, and the Eagles would not get within eight the rest of the way.
Philbert finished with 16 points, Bueno tallied 14 and a game-high nine rebounds, and sophomore guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) had 10 to go with seven rebounds and three assists in the win.
The Cougars play one more regular season contest, at Bloomfield on Saturday. A win would secure a CACC Tournament spot and potentially a home game in Tuesday's quarterfinals, while a loss could leave CU out of the mix, pending other results.
