CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman guard
Brianna Carey (Clifton Park, N.Y.) buried a right-angle three pointer with 0:42 left to give Caldwell women's basketball the lead for good in a 73-69 triumph over CACC North co-leader Post in a thriller at the Newman Center on Wednesday.
With the score tied at 67 with 3:43 left, both teams had opportunities to take the lead before Post (16-9, 11-4) converted two free throws for a 69-67 edge with 1:20 left. After an exchange of missed shots, Carey took a feed from soph guard
Amyah Bray (Manchester, N.J.) and drilled the eventual game-winner for three of her 12 points. After a defensive stop, soph
Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) made two free throws with 10 seconds left and Bray made another with 0:01 left to secure the win.
Coogan finished with game-highs of 26 points and 17 rebounds, adding five assists to her standout day. Freshman guard
Jahnel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) pumped in 20 points and had four assists and two steals, while Bray contributed 13 points, 5 rebounds and four assists for the Cougars (8-18, 4-11 CACC).
Post started off the game hot, taking an early 14-8 lead that opened to 31-19 in the first minute of the second half. But The Cougars scored 12 straight over the next five-plus minutes, started by a layup by junior
KJ Gordon (Latham, N.Y.) and finished off by a Coogan layup with 3:43 left in the half.Â
After the visitors built a four-point advantage at the intermission and led by as many as seven in the opening minutes of the third, the Cougars again rallied to tie, a conventional three by Lewis knotting the score at 48 with just under 6:00 left in the period.
Consecutive layups by Lewis put CU up by four, and the hosts would take a 60-57 lead into the final quarter, extending to its largest edge of 67-62 with 6:52 left before Carey's late heroics provided the win.
Caldwell completes the season at Bloomfield on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Battle for Bloomfield Avenue.
