CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in overtime, making all four of his shots, including three threes, as Caldwell men's basketball won a thrilling 95-87 verdict from Holy Family in CACC action at the Newman Center on Saturday. The victory marked the fourth straight for the Cougars (13-11, 8-5 CACC).
The Cougars were without the services of soph guard
Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) and soph guard
Kirk Parsons (Newark, N.J.) for much of the afternoon, after both went down with leg injuries. Two foul disqualifications further whittled the Cougars roster, but Philbert, soph guard
Daniel Boateng (Woodbridge, N.J.; eight points) and soph guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.; 12 points, five rebounds) stepped up off the bench, supporting junior guard
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) who had a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, adding a game-high six assists.
The Cougars started overtime by scoring the first five points on a layup by Heber and trey by Philber, never trailing in the extra session. After HFU (8-14, 4-8 CACC) got to within four at 82-78, Philbert swished two more long range missiles, giving the Cougars a double digit lead at 88-78, and key 2-2 free throws down the stretch by Heber, Boateng and freshman forward
Jordan Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) made those points stand up.
Junior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) hd 17 points on seven of 10 shooting from the floor.
Caldwell steps out of conference play for a bonus non-league contest against Jefferson on Tuesday at 7:30 at the Newman Center, in a matchup between last year's CACC finalists.
