WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior swingman
De'Angelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) made nine of 13 field goals, racking up 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds in his second collegiate game as Caldwell men's basketball grabbed its second straight win over an NE10 team by topping host Assumption, 75-72, in the second game of the Tip-Off Classic at Andrew Laska Gym.
Caldwell (2-0) took a 55-44 lead on a conventional three-point play by Horn with 13:37 left, and after the Greyhounds pulled to within three, extended again to 11 on a run capped by two free throws and a three pointer by Horn for a 71-60 advantage with 4:46 left.
Again AU battled back, edging to within a point at 73-72 with under a minute to go. Soph forward
Jaiden Williams (New York) blocked a potential go-ahead three pointer with 0:10 left, and junior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) extended the lead to 75-72 with 0:07 left with two free throws. A defensive stand that ended with a steal by senior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) sealed the win.
Bueno had 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and added three assists and three steals, while Williams finished with 11 points.
Caldwell next takes on another high-level opponent when they battle Franklin Pierce on Friday at the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament at Dominican University in Orangeburg, N.Y. in their next action.
