Men's Basketball Wins Nail-Biter To Extend Winning Streak To Six

Cougars dish out 23 assists in win

CALDWELL, N.J.  --  Senior forward Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) scored 21 points and had a team-high seven assists to help Caldwell men's basketball (6-0) stay undefeated in their 76-71 win over the American International College Yellow Jackets (1-5) at the Newman Center.

Junior guard/forward DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) poured in 23 points for his second consecutive game to lead the Cougars in scoring.

Sophomore guard Jaiden Williams (New York, N.Y.) went 3-4 from three-point range and finished with 16 points.

The Cougars led by as many as nine in the second half, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to tie it at 66 with under 3:00 left. Then after layups by Williams and Bueno  and a three by AIC made it a 70-69 CU advantage, Williams connected on a three with 1:02 left and the Cougars made three free throws and two steals by junior guard Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y) in the final seconds sealed the win.

Caldwell exploded for 40 points in the second half after taking a 36-35 advantage into halftime. There were three lead changes and two ties in the game.

CU collected 29 rebounds with Horn grabbing nine to pace the Cougars.

Caldwell played great defense, forcing AIC to turn the ball over 18 times.

The Cougars will host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Newman Center.
