CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and junior swingman
DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) had a game-high 23, pacing Caldwell men's basketball to its fifth straight win to open the season, a come-from-behind, 75-72 triumph over Bloomsburg at the Newman Center on Tuesday in the home opener.
The Cougars took a 39-28 lead at halftime, but the Huskies (1-4) battled back, tying the game at 42 and eventually taking a lead of as much as seven, last at 57-50 with 11:40 left. Â
But an 8-0 run, capped by layups by Bueno and junior guard
Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y) over the next five minutes gave the hosts the one-point edge. The lead changed hands a few times until, trailing 66-63 with 3:33 left, the Cougars made their critical surge, a 10-0 spurt that included three Bueno layups and two Horn two-pointers and some solid defense that put CU up to stay.
Caldwell's 5-0 start is its best since 1997-98, when they went on to a 23-7 mark and CACC regular season and tournament championships and NAIA tournament appearance. They began the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons at 7-0.
Sophomore guard
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched in 16. Evans filled the stat sheet with six assists, four steals, two blocks and three rebounds and freshman guard
Tristan Rogers (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had four rebounds and four assists.
The Cougars resume play on their current four-game homestand on Saturday, hosting AIC at 1 p.m.
