ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- Â Caldwell men's basketball (4-0) defeated the previously unbeaten East Stroudsburg Warriors (3-1) 79-77 in a wild sequence at the end of the game at the 12th annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament at the Hennessy Center.
With the game tied at 77, freshman guard
Tristan Rogers (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored the game-winning bucket with 9.6 seconds after picking up a loose ball in the lane following long pass upcourt from senior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.). CU then made a crucial defensive stop to seal the victory. Rogers scored 11 points on the night.
The Cougars could not miss from three-point range, making 14 triples.
The sophomore guard duo of
Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Jaiden Williams (New York, N.Y.) were both unconscious from beyond the arc. Philbert made six of his nine attempts from deep and finished with a game-high 23 points. Williams went four of five from three and had 14 points.
Junior guard/forward
DeAngelo Horn (Castle Rock, Colo.) put up a solid effort, scoring eight points and grabbing 11 rebounds with three assists.
Caldwell played excellent defense, forcing 17 turnovers in the game and limiting ESU, which had been averaging 99 points per game in the first three contests, to 77 points on 39% shooting from the floor.
CU will return to the Newman Center for their home opener when they welcome Bloomsburg University in a "Cougars Around Campus" Game! on Tuesday at 7 PM. It begins a four-game homestand.
