CALDWELL, N.J. -- With time winding down in a key CACC battle at Wilmington, Caldwell men's basketball needed a lift. And up stepped junior forward
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.), who made two free throws with 0:20 left, then swished two more with 0:07 remaining, lifting the Cougars to a hard-earned 75-72 win at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday.
The Cougars took a 47-39 halftime lead and had the edge throughout the second half until Wilmington (8-6, 3-1 CACC) took a 70-69 advantage with 2:10 left. Junior guard
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) hit a mid-range jumper to put CU back ahead, 71-70, with 1:51 left before freshman
Jaiden Williams (New York) made a huge block on a reverse layup attempt, and Bueno corralled the board to preserve the one-point lead. One possession later, WU took the lead on a pair of free throws, before Bueno's heroics gave the Cougars (5-7, 1-2) the win.
Bueno netted a career-high 28 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the floor and pulled down 13 rebounds in the triumph. Sophomore guard
Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) added 20 and Heber posted 14.
Caldwell returns to action on Tuesday, hosting CACC North rival Dominican at 7:30 at the Newman Center.
