Evans, Ngom Late Heroics Help Men's Basketball Rally to Thrilling Win at Jefferson, 76-75

Evans three-point play, Ngom Layup, Defensive Stand Preserve Win in Rematch of '23 CACC Final

PHILADELPHIA -- Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) converted a traditional three-point play and soph Moussa Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) followed with a layup on the ensuing possession, helping Caldwell men's basketball complete a 14-point comeback in the final 7:00 to record its biggest win of the season, a thrilling 76-75 triumph over Jefferson in a matchup of last year's CACC finals combatants at Gallagher Center.

Trailing, 67-53, with 7:18 to go, the Cougars began their comeback with a pair of free throws and layup by junior Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.Y.). After the hosts went back up by 12 at 71-59, Caldwell (6-7, 2-2 CACC) made its final charge, a three by Bueno and three free throws by sophomore Melvin Evans (Bronx, N.Y.) keying the push that Darnell Evans completed with a sharp drive to the basket, making the layup and adding the and-one with 1:34 left.

After a Jefferson turnover, Evans controlled the possession which ended on a baby hook by Ngom for a four-point CU lead, 76-72, with under 1:00 left.

Jefferson (6-7, 2-2) pulled within a point on a three pointer and forced the Cougars into a shot clock violation, giving the hosts hope on its final possession with 0:06 left. Solid defense by Ngom, Darnell Evans and freshman Isaiah Philbert (Bronx, N.Y.) forced a hurried shot that came up short, giving the Cougars their second straight road conference victory.

Philbert made four threes, totaling 15 points, while Moussa grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Darnell Evans added six rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.

The Cougars took a 43-38 lead at halftime, finishing on a two free throws by sophomore Kirk Parsons (Newark, N.J.) and a layup by freshman Jaiden Willams (New York) finishing out the half.

The Cougars continue a four-game road swing through the CACC with a contest at Post on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
