CALDWELL, N.J. -- A frantic fourth-quarter rally fell just short as Caldwell women's basketball whittled a double-digit deficit to one before finally falling, 64-60, to Chestnut Hill (12-5, 6-1 CACC) in a CACC contest at the Newman Center.
Graduate forward
Sophia DeMauro (New York) had a team-best 16 points, followed closely by freshman guard
Jahnel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) and sophomore
Amyah Bray (Manchester, N.J.) with 15 each as CU took the CACC South second place team down to the wire.
Trailing by double digits since midway through the third quarter, the Cougars, facing a 58-48 deficit with 3:26 left, drew to within one on two consecutive three pointers by DeMauro, both assisted by Lewis, and third by soph guard
Gules Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 1:16 left.
After a Griffins Layup, the Cougars had a chance to tie but a three with 0:30 left rimmed out and after CHC made a pair of free throws, another Esposito trifecta pulled the Cougars (4-11, 1-5) to within two. But CHC made the two ensuing free throws to seal the win.
Freshman wing
Brooke Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.), DeMauro and freshman guard
Brianna Carey (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each registered five rebounds and four steals, while Corbett added a game -high five assists.
The Cougars next host Bloomfield at the Newman Center on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
