Schiltz's Nine Kills, Mack's 16 Assists Not Enough As Caldwell Volleyball Falls to Post

Sherwood nine digs, seven kills, Piper Collects five kills in defeat

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Senior middle blocker Amanda Schiltz (Durham, N.C.) had a team-best nine kills and sophomore setter Jordan Mack (Yorba Linda, Calif.) paced the Cougars with 16 assists, but Caldwell volleyball fell at home in three sets to CACC foe Post (2-9. 2-0 CACC) at Newman Center.

The first set was the most competitive of the three, as the Cougars rallied from a 19-16 deficit with three straight points to even the set. They again battled from a 22-19 deficit, a kill by junior OH Mya Burnett (Newark, N.J.) and service ace by sophomore DS Torrien Jones (Camp Springs, Md.) edging the Cougars to within a point.

But after the teams exchanged points, the Eagles put away the last two points for the 25-22 win.

The visitors jumped out to a 12-5 lead in  the second, extending to 20-8 before Caldwell (1-6, 1-2) put together its most impressive string of points in the match, winning eight straight, seven on the service arm of junior DS Karin Ojeda (Toms River, N.J.), including two aces and kills by senior hitter Gabriella Maffei (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and junior RS Natalie Piper (Long Beach, Calif.).

But again Post closed out the set, this time using a 5-1 run for the 25-17 win.

The Cougars again got into a deficit midway through the third set that they couldn't overcome, making their best move down 21-15 with three of the next four points to rail by four. But the Eagles again seized the opportunity to close out the set and the match, 25-19.

Senior Reese Sherwood (Salem, Ore.) had another fine all-around game, collecting seven kills, a team-best nine digs and five assists.

The Cougars next visit CACC foe Bridgeport on Thursday in a 7 p.m. matchup with the Purple Knights.
