Five-run Uprising Wins Opener; Cougars drop nightcap despite Late Rally

NEWARK, N.J. -- Graduate third baseman Waldy Arias (Plainfield, N.J.) had a solo home run and two-run single as part of a 3-for-5 game and freshman CF Joshua Lopez (New City, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI as Caldwell baseball (15-24, 8-15) split a CACC doubleheader with Bloomfield on Tuesday at West Side Park, winning the opener, 7-6, and falling, 12-11 in eight innings in the nightcap.

In game one, the Cougars trailed, 4-1, entering the seventh, but tallied five in that frame on a freshman DH Christopher Bayo (Miami) solo home run, RBI hit by pitch by senior C Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.), two-run single by Arias and sacrifice fly by Junior 1B Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.). Lopez tacked on an insurane run on an RBI hit to make a winner of freshman righty John Rigas (Lincoln Park, N.J.) (5-4), who pitched the first six innings. Jerry Gamone tossed the last three for his second save.

In game two, the Cougars rallied a from a 4-1 deficit on a three-run, third-inning home run by Saunders, and rallied twice more, an RBI single by sophomore LF Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y) and RBI walk by freshman LF Stephen Young Jr. (Middlesex, N.J.) tying the game at 9-9 in the eighth and RBI triple by Saunders and sacrifice fly by freshman 3B Michael Cruz (Miami) giving Caldwell an 11-9 lead in the eighth in the scheduled seven inning game. A pair of home runs, though, in the bottom of the frame won the game for the host Bears (16-28, 11-12).

The Cougars play Alliance on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Kiwanis Oval in the final games of the regular season. Six Cougars will be honored on Senior Day between games.
