CALDWELL, N.J. -- Freshman righthander
Olivia Kennedy (Chenango Forks, N.Y.) fired a three hitter in game one, striking out eight, and graduate righthander
Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.) permitted just three hits over six innings in the second contest, leading Caldwell softball to a doubleheader sweep of Chestnut Hill, 2-1 and 6-1, at Caldwell Athletic Field.
In the opener, the Cougars won in the bottom of the seventh when the CHC shortstop couldn't handle a sharp grounder by senior 1B
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), scoring sophomore left fielder
Paris Balilonis (Philadelphia), who had re-entered after a pinch single by sophomore
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) opened the frame with a singe, then advance to second on a bunt single by sophomore RF
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) and to third on a sac bunt by Senior 2B
Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.).
Kennedy went the distance, allowing just one hit after the second inning, allowing just the three singles and no walks to raise her record to 6-2 and lower her ERA slightly to 1.31.
In the nightcap, the Cougars got on the board early, scoring four in the first on RBI by Grundhauser, Rodriguez and freshman 2B
Cameron Fehsal (Succasunna, N.J.). They plated two more in the fourth, a Klein triple and sacrifice fly by Grundhauser driving in the runs. Burns went the first six, fanning nine and allowing no earned runs for her team-high 10th win of the season.
Klein and Rodriguez each had two hits in both games as the Cougars (28-11, 18-3 CACC) won their fifth straight and eight of their last nine.
