CALDWELL, N.J. - Head Coach
Dean Johnson, now in his 29th season at the helm of the Cougars softball squad, earned his 900th and 901st victories as Caldwell topped Dominican (4-20, 1-7) in a doubleheader, 18-0 and 20-2. Johnson, last year's CACC Coach of the Year, ranks among the top 15 among all active Division II softball coaches.
His milestone win came in a near no-hitter by freshman
Olivia Kennedy (Chenango Forks, N.Y.), who retired the first nine Chargers and did not permit a hit until a two-out single in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Cougars offense was rolling, batting around in both the first and second innings, scoring nine and six runs, respectively, to open the game. Freshman center fielder
Olivia Magliacano (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) delivered a key blow, a booming three-run double in the right center field gap to give Caldwell at 5-0 lead. Sophomore RF
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) scored twice in the inning, and sophomore DP
Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.) delivered two RBI singles in the frame.
Winters' third RBI hit of the game, a double, began the scoring in the second, with Senior left fielder
Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.), freshman 3B
Alexa Lee (Blackwood, N.J.) and soph catcher
Savannah Yearwood (Elk Grove, Calif.) also driving in runs in the inning.
In the nightcap, it was another fast start for Caldwell (12-7, 5-0 CACC), as the lineup batted around twice in the first inning, plating 14 runs. Sophomore DP
Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) had two doubles and 3 RBI in the frame, while Lee also drove in three runs with a pair of singles. The Cougars added five more in the second, a two-run home run by senior 2B
Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) and two-run double by Magliacano accounting for most of the damage.
Graduate
Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) tossed the first three innings for her third win.
In all, the Cougars banged out 34 hits in the two contest.
Caldwell continues its busy week by visiting CACC foes Goldey Beacom (Thursday, 2 p.m.) and Thomas Jefferson (Sunday, noon, rescheduled from Saturday) this week, then returns to face new CACC rival Bridgeport on Tuesday at 2:30.
