BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Graduate
Madison Burns (East Greenbush, N.Y.) permitted just one hit, a one-out, seventh-inning single, and the Cougars softball team used a six-run first inning to cruise to a 6-1 triumph over Bloomfield in the first game of a twin bill at Clark's Pond South. Game two was rained out during the fourth inning and will be made up on a date TBD.
The Cougars got their bats working quickly in the first, lashing seven hits to build up the early cushion. A three-run double by freshman 3B
Alexa Lee (Blackwood, N.J.) was the big punch, with sophomore DP
Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.), Senior left fielder
Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) and sophomore RF
Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) also delivering RBI in the inning.
Burns was masterful for the Cougars, striking out three and carrying the no-no for 19 outs before Jocelyn Moody ripped a clean hit up the middle for Bloomfield (4-21, 1-2 CACC). The righthander, now 4-1 on the season, induced a double play grounder back to the circle on the next batter to finish the win.
The Cougars (10-7, 3-0 CACC) rapped out 12 hits in all, two each by soph SS
Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.), senior 2B
Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) and freshman center fielder
Olivia Magliacano (Berkeley Heights, N.J.).
The Cougars led, 8-0, before rain washed away the second game before it reached official status.
The Cougars take on Dominican at Caldwell Athletic Fields on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
