Klein, Winters Pace Offense, Culver, Daly Shut Down Holy Family in Softball Sweep

CALDWELL, N.J. -- Sophomore RF Jessica Klein (Trevose, Pa.) and sophomore Allison Winters (Blairstown, N.J.) were among the offensive stars on a 27-hit day and the pitching duo of senior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) and graduate Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) each pitched complete games, giving Caldwell softball a sweep of Holy Family, 6-3 and 8-0, in CACC action at the Caldwell Athletic Fields on Sunday.

In the opener, the Cougars (9-7. 2-0), who have now won six straight, opened fast with a run in the first on Winters's double, then grabbed a 5-0 lead on RBI by freshman 3B Alexa Lee (Blackwood, N.J.), Klein, soph SS Ashleigh Tavaska (Jackson, N.J.) and senior 1B Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the second. After the Tigers (5-19, 3-3) pulled to within 5-3, Winters singled in another run for the final margin. The Cougars banged out 14 hits in the win.

Culver tossed a five-hitter, fanning four and not issuing a walk for her third win of the season.

In the second contest, Daly limited the Tigers to two singles and no walks and fanned six in earning the shutout and her second win of the year. Klein belted out two more hits to pace the host's 13-hit attack. Senior left fielder Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.), freshman center fielder Olivia Magliacano (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), Lee, sophomore DP Brooke Martin (Oakland, Maine) (two), Rodriguez and senior 2B Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) drove in runs for Caldwell. The Cougars closed the game via the eight-run rule with a four-run sixth, capped by Martin's single plating Grunhauser.

The Cougars are right back at it on Monday, visiting Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader at Clark's Pond South beginning at 2:30 p.m. and return home on Wednesday to face Dominican in a twin-bill, also a 2:30 start.
