STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Amyah Bray (Manchester, N.J.) had 18 points, including two clutch free throws in the closing seconds, pacing four Cougars in double figures, as Caldwell Women's Basketball won, 65-59, in non-league action at Staten Island (5-6).
The Cougars (3-4) used a late first-quarter run, keyed by three-pointers by sophomore
Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) and freshman
Brianna Carey (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and a pair of Bray free throws for a  12-point lead after the first. The Cougars kept the 12-point halftime lead at 35-23, five straight points by freshman
Jahnel Lewis (Jersey City, N.J.) and a basket by soph
Gules Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) finishing off the half.
The game tightened in the fourth, a strong Staten Island rally pulling the hosts to within 61-59 with 0:14 left. But Bray drew a foul and calmly sank the two ensuing free throws to put the game away, a late defensive stop and breakaway layup by Carey completing the scoring.
Bray finished with five rebounds, three steals and two assists to go with her team high in points. Graduate
Sophia DeMauro (New York) had 14 points and matched the game-high with nine rebounds, while Lewis and Coogan had 10 points each. Freshman guard
Brooke Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) had eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
CU next visits St. Michaels in a non-league game on Monday at 1 p.m.
