Darnell Evans' (Amityville, N.Y.) notched his second straight 26-point effort and junior
Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) posted 20 to go along with game-highs of 12 rebounds and five assists, leading Caldwell men's basketball (2-0) to a 99-81 victory over D'Youville (0-2) at the Caldwell Conference Challenge at Newman Center on Saturday.
The Cougars raced to an 18-2 lead and led by as many as 26 at 51-26 with under 4:00 to play in the first half. But the Saints marched back, cutting their deficit to 17 by the break and would get as close as 11 at 64-53 with 15:01 left. But the Cougars would shoot back out to a 15-point lead on baskets by freshman
Jaiden Williams (New York) on a great feed from Bueno, then from Bueno on a no-look from Evans, and DYU would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Also in double figures for Caldwell were junior
Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) and soph
Kirk Parsons (Newark, N.J.) with 11 each.Â
Evans added six rebounds and six steals to his day.
Caldwell next visits Bloomsburg out of the PSAC on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Pennsylvania.
