LAKEWOOD, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior
Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 22 points as the Cougars fell in the final seconds to Georgian Court University 67-66 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars falls to 7-9 on the season and 3-5 in the CACC, while the Lions improve to 4-9 and 2-5 in conference play.
A back and forth first quarter ended with a flurry as the Lions connected on a triple in the waning seconds. Senior
Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) took the in-bounds pass and launched a shot from half court, backing in a three-pointer to tie the score at 16 as time expired to end the quarter.
Georgian Court pulled ahead 22-18 early in the second quarter but the Cougars rallied back. Caldwell used a 19-4 run over the next seven minutes as freshman
Lucy Coogan (Kilkenny, Ireland) drained a triple to start the run. Senior
Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) added four in the run, while freshman
Amyah Bray (Manchester, N.J.) connected on a pair from downtown, including one at the 1:22 mark to put the Cougars ahead 37-26. The Lions scored the final four points of the half to cut the score to 37-30 at halftime.
The Cougars pushed ahead 46-38 at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter but the Lions rallied back to take a 51-50 lead with just over a minute to play. Bray converted a four-point plat as time expired in the quarter to put Caldwell back in front 54-51 heading to the final quarter.
The teams traded leads throughout the final quarter with Lions connecting on a go-ahead three-pointer with 23 seconds left. The Cougars missed on a pair of shots in the waning seconds as Caldwell fell short.
O'Shaughnessy led the way with 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. Bray dropped in a career-high 13 points, shooting 4-for-8 from downtown, while adding four boards. Senior
Jessica Wagoner (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Morrison added four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Graduate
Saundra Cleckley (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) tallied 11 rebounds, three assists, while Coogan swatted three shots and grabbed six boards.
The Cougars wrap up their three-game road trip as they head to Bloomfield College for a CACC contest on Tuesday, January 17 at 5:30 pm.
