CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team opened their 2022 season with a doubleheader split against the College of Staten Island. Caldwell won the opener 4-1 with the Dolphins taking the nightcap 5-2.

The Cougars open their season at 1-1, while the Dolphins move to 4-4.

In the opener, Caldwell got on the board in the first inning as senior
Frank Lehmann (Colonia, N.J.) led off with a single and proceeded to steal second and third. Senior
Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.) singled with two outs to drive in the first run of the season.

The Cougars added to their lead in the second inning as freshman
Santo Anzalone (Middle Village, N.Y.). Freshman
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) singled to score Anzalone for a 2-0 lead. Lombardi advanced to third and scored on a single by junior
Michael Lazzaro (Toms River, N.J.). In the fifth, senior
Jalen March (Baltimore, Md.) doubled with one out and scored on a run scoring triple by Lombardi.

In the nightcap, Caldwell took the early lead in the first inning. Sophomore
Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Sophomore
Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.) followed with a double to score Putney.

The Dolphins took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Caldwell answered in their half of the third as freshman
Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) lead off with a single. Scalisi would score later in the inning on a Putney groundout to tie the game at 2-2.

Staten Island rallied in the seventh as they pushed across three runs to pull ahead 5-2.

The Cougars head south to the Sunshine State, starting on Saturday, March 12 as they face Stonehill College in a doubleheader at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, Florida.
