CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University baseball freshman
Brandon Scalisi (New City, N.Y.) struck out nine in a complete game effort in the nightcap as the Cougars earned a split against Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The Chargers won the opener 10-6, but the Cougars took the nightcap 4-2.
The Cougars move to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the CACC, while the Chargers stand at 5-17 and 2-2 in conference play.
Caldwell got on the board in the second inning as freshman
Santo Anzalone (Middle Village, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a triple by senior
Jalen March (Baltimore, Md.). Freshman
Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y.) added a sacrifice fly to put the Cougars up 2-0.
Dominican scored one run in the third inning and added three runs in the sixth for a 4-2 Charger lead. Caldwell pulled even in the sixth as sophomore
Zach Saunders (Adelphi, Md.) blasted a two-run homerun.
The Chargers pushed ahead 10-4 in the later innings. Caldwell added two runs in the ninth on an error and a Lombardi run scoring single.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) doubled in a run in the first inning for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. The Cougars added runs in the fourth and fifth inning as Lombardi drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Freshman
Joseph Witt (North Arlington, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
Dominican closed the gap in the sixth as they scored twice to cut the score to 3-2. March added an insurance run for Caldwell with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth.
Scalisi improved to 2-0 on the season as he tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out nine in the win.
The Cougars host Felician University for a CACC contest on Wednesday, March 30 at 2 pm.
