Pannell Scores Season-High 16 Points in Men’s Basketball Loss to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del.- Caldwell University men's basketball sophomore Ty-Shon Pannell (Central Islip, N.Y.) netted a season-high 16 points in the Cougars 76-68 loss to Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up.
 
The Cougars fall to 7-12 overall and 3-8 in the CACC, while the Wildcats improve to 7-15 and 4-8 in conference play.
 
Wilmington jumped out to an 18-4 over the first six minutes of the game. Caldwell answered with a 15-4 run to close the gap to three points. Freshman Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) drained a triple and added a three-point play in the rally. Pannell connected on three trifectas including one at the 8:26 mark to cut the score to 22-19.
 
The Wildcats scored eight straight to push ahead by double digits but Caldwell rallied late in the half. Pannell drained a three-pointer in the final minute to cut the score to 34-28 at halftime.
 
Caldwell rallied back to start the second half as junior Tyler Washington (Englewood, N.J.) drained a three-pointer. Sophomore Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) scored in the paint at the 13:55 mark to even the score at 41.
 
Wilmington pushed ahead 56-47 with under eight minutes to play in the game. Pannell added a three-pointer as part of a 10-4 burst that was capped by a three-point play by senior Anthony Cooper (Ashburn, Va.) to cut the score to 60-57 with 3:38 remaining in the game. The Wildcats connected on 10 free throws over the final three plus minutes to hold off the Cougars down the stretch.
 
Pannell drained a season-high five triples, finishing 5-for-7 from downtown, totaling a season-best 16 points to lead the Cougars. Cooper tallied 15 points, four boards and three assists, while Heber totaled 13 points and three rebounds. Rancy grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds along with two blocks in the game.
 
The Cougars host Nyack College for a CACC contest on Wednesday, February 9 at 7:30 pm.
