Men’s Basketball Head Coach Dean Johnson Earns First Career Coaching Victory; Cougars Cruise Past Molloy

ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball head coach Dean Johnson earned his first victory as the program's head coach as the Cougars cruised past Molloy University 102-76 on day one of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament hosted on the campus of Dominican University of New York.
 
The Cougars improve to 1-3, while the Lions fall to 0-4.
 
 Caldwell jumped out to a 21-6 lead over the first six minutes of the game. Sophomore Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) scored five points in the run, while sophomore Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.) drained a pair from downtown. Freshman Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the way with eight points, including capping the run with his second three-pointer at the 13:59 mark.
 
Molloy closed the gap to 23-16 midway through the half before the Cougars finish strong with a late run. Caldwell pulled away with an 18-7 run as Rancy scored four points as part of a balanced offensive attack to extend their lead back to double digits at 41-23. Senior Tyler Washington (Englewood, N.J.) drained a triple in the final minute of the half, while freshman Kirk Parsons (Newark, N.J.) scored at the buzzer to give the Cougars a 49-32 halftime lead.
 
The Cougars opened the second half with a 17-7 run as Heber drained a triple, totaling seven points in the run. Evans connected on a pair of trifectas to help Caldwell extend their lead to 66-49 with 15:57 left in the game. The Cougars maintained their double-digit advantage to the final buzzer.
 
Heber shot 3-for-4 from downtown as he led the way with 21 points and six rebounds. Evans connected on 4-of-8 from behind the arc, totaling 20 points in the win. Rancy tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks, while Washington finished with 10 points and three boards. Freshman Moussa Ngom (Centreville, Va.) led the team with nine rebounds.
 
The Cougars close out play at the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament on Sunday, November 20 as they face Cheyney University of Pennsylvania at 4:30 pm.
