O’Shaughnessy Nets 19 Points, Brown Drains Four Triples as Women’s Basketball Downs Mercy

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball senior Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 19 points, while senior Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) drained four triples as the Cougars notched their first win of the season with a 57-48 victory over Mercy College.
 
The Cougars improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Mavericks drop to 1-2.
 
The teams traded leads through the opening quarter but the Cougars pulled ahead late in the quarter. Brown drained a triple, while senior Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) added a bucket to put the Cougars ahead 18-14 after one quarter.
 
In a low scoring second quarter, Brown drained a pair of triples, totaling six of Caldwell's 10 points to help them extend their lead to 28-18 at halftime.
 
Caldwell opened the second half with a 10-2 run to extend their halftime advantage. O'Shaughnessy and senior Jessica Wagoner (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each scored four points as give the Cougars a 38-20 lead midway through the quarter. Mercy got as close as nine points in the final minute of the game but the Cougars prevailed as O'Shaughnessy drained a pair of free throws in the waning seconds.
 
O'Shaughnessy led the way with 19 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the win. Brown connected on 4-of-5 from downtown, finishing with 14 points and nine boards, while Morrison recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Wagoner added six points, six rebounds and two blocks, while graduate Saundra Cleckley (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) grabbed 10 rebounds, three assists along with six points.  
 
The Cougars return to action as they will compete in the Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament hosted on the campus of Dominican University of New York this weekend. Caldwell faces Molloy University on Saturday, November 19 and Franklin Pierce University the following day. Both games will tip-off at 11 am.
