Washington Nets 17 Points as Men’s Basketball Falls to Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior Tyler Washington (Englewood, N.J.) dropped in 17 points but the Cougars fell short to Southern Connecticut State University 72-69 in a non-conference contest.
 
The Cougars fall to 0-3, while the Owls improve to 1-2.
 
Caldwell opened up an 11-8 lead over the first six minutes as Washington scored three points, while freshman Darnell Evans (Deer Park, N.Y.) added four points. The Owls answered with a 17-2 run to push ahead 25-13 with 7:40 left in the first half.
 
The Cougars flipped the script with an 18-6 run, powered by seven points from sophomore Mark Heber (Paterson, N.J.), who drained a triple in the run. Evans added nine points, including capping the with a three-point play at the 2:02 mark to tie the score at 31. The Owls made a late run to lead 36-33 at halftime.
 
Southern Connecticut State bulged their lead to 52-43 midway through the second half. Caldwell rallied back as sophomore Derrick Bueno (Palisades Park, N.J.) scored five points in a run, while Heber drained a triple with seven points in the rally. Washington connected on a pair from downtown, including one at the 4:42 mark to cut the score to 63-61.
 
The Owls pushed ahead by six points but the Cougars stayed within striking distance down the stretch. Caldwell has one final run in the waning second but a potential game-tying three-point attempt missed the mark as time expired.
 
Evans led the Cougars with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Washington netted 17 points and five boards, shooting 4-of-6 down behind the arc. Heber tallied 16 points, three rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) finished with three steals and a pair of blocks.
 
The Cougars return to action as they will compete in the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament hosted on the campus of Dominican University of New York this weekend. Caldwell faces Molloy University on Saturday, November 19 and Cheyney University of Pennsylvania the following day. Both games will tip-off at 4:30 pm.
