Softball Falls to Post in CACC Twin Bill

WATERBURY, Conn.- The Caldwell University softball team fell short in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Post University. The Eagles rallied back to take the opener 5-4 and the Cougars fell in the nightcap 4-3.  
 
The Cougars fall to 3-3 overall and 3-3 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 4-2 and 4-2 in conference play.
 
In the opener, Caldwell got on the board in the third inning as they scored four runs. Junior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) and sophomore Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) singles early in the inning. Junior Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) reached on an error with two outs to allow the first run of the game to come home. Sophomore Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) followed with a three-run homerun for put the Cougars ahead 4-0.
 
Post rallied back in their final two at-bats as they scored one run in the fifth and took the lead with four runs in the sixth inning.
 
Junior pitcher Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts to take the loss.
 
In the nightcap, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead as Mischler doubled with one out in the first inning. Senior Paige Sandoval (Alisa Viejo, Calif.) followed with a run scoring double for a 1-0 Caldwell lead.
 
Post answered in their half of the inning with three runs. The Eagles added a run in the second for a 4-1 lead.
 
Caldwell closed the gap in the sixth as freshman Paige Silvia (Taunton, Mass.) drove in a run with a groundout, while junior Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) added a run-scoring single to cut the score to 4-3.
 
Junior Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) took the loss as she pitched two innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Morgan Kapp (Waterloo, N.Y.) tossed four scoreless innings, allowing four hits.
 
The Cougars travel to Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader on Thursday, April 8 at 3:00 pm.
