LYNDHURST, N.J.- The Caldwell University softball team scored 21 runs with three homeruns as the Cougars swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against the Felician University. The Cougars won the opener 10-2 in five innings and completed the sweep with an 11-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.
The Cougars improve to 17-8-1 overall and 14-8 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons drop to 10-17 and 9-8 in conference play.
In the opener, Caldwell struck first as senior
Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. The Cougars erupted for six runs in the third inning as sophomore
Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) doubled in a run in the inning. Sophomore
Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) and Sandoval added run scoring singles in the inning, while junior
Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars added to their lead in the fourth as junior
Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) singled in a run. Sandoval hit a solo homerun in the fifth, while junior
Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) added an RBI single.
Junior
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) earned the win to improve to 10-4, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman
Morgan Kapp (Waterloo, N.Y.) recorded the final out to end the first game.
In the nightcap, Caldwell got on the board with three runs in the opening inning. Stansell scored on a passed ball, while Mischler stole home later in the inning on a double steal. Sandoval doubled in a run to put the Cougars ahead 3-0.
The Cougars tacked on four runs in the second as Grundhauser drove in a run with a single. VanGorder blasted a three-run homerun to extend their lead to 7-0.
Senior
Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) added a three-run homerun in the fourth, while freshman
Chloe Pocceschi (Annandale, N.J.) doubled in a run in the fifth.
Junior
Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 6-4 as she tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out three. Kapp closed out the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Cougars host Dominican College for a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 28 at 2:30 pm.
