Sandoval Drives in Two in Game 1 Win; Softball Splits Concordia

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.- Caldwell University softball senior Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) doubled in two runs in a game one win in extra innings as the Cougars split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference against Concordia College. The Cougars won the opener 3-1 in eight innings, while Concordia took the nightcap 2-1.
 
The Cougars move to 11-8-1 overall and 10-8 in the CACC, while the Clippers stand at 7-7 and 7-7 in conference play.
 
In the opener, junior Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) doubled with one out in the third inning. Sophomore Taylor Mischler (Endicott, N.Y.) doubled to put runners at second and third with senior Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Stansell.
 
The Clippers answered in their half of the inning to even the score at 1-1 and the games headed to extra innings.
 
In the eighth, Mischler singled to lead off the inning. Ramirez reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a groundout. Sandoval doubled home both runners to put the Cougars ahead 3-1.
 
Junior Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) closed the door on a complete game effort as she allowed one run on two hits and striking out six to improve to 7-4.
 
In the nightcap, sophomore Courtney Grundhauser (Easton, Pa.) gave the Cougars an early lead with a solo inside the park homerun in the fourth inning.
 
Concordia was held off the board until the plated a pair of runs in the sixth to pull ahead 2-1. Caldwell was unable to get a run in their final at-bat and Concordia held on for the win.
 
Junior Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) took the loss to fall to 4-4. She allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.  
 
The Cougars host Molloy College for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 22 at 2:30 pm.
