NORTH WALES, Pa.- Caldwell University baseball senior
Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.) homered twice and drove in seven in game one but the Cougars dropped a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests to Chestnut Hill College.
The Griffins won the opener 9-8 in walk-off fashion in extra innings, while the Cougars fell short in the nightcap 8-1.
In the opener, Chestnut Hill took a 5-0 lead after five innings of play. The Cougars rallied back in the sixth as they scored five runs. Freshman
Noah Putney (Glassboro, N.J.) drew a lead off walk and moved to third base on two wild pitches in the inning.
Senior
Dhillon Barbetti (West Long Branch, N.J.) was hit by a pitch, while senior
Luis Rullan (Bloomfield, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Putney with the first Caldwell run. Senior
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) singled to left to load the bases. Brunson followed with a grand slam homerun to tie the game at 5-5 to forces extra innings.
In the eighth, the international tie breaker was in effect as the Cougars started with a runner at second. Zosulis drew a lead off walk, while Brunson again crushed a three-run homerun to put the Cougars in front 8-5.
The Griffins rallied in their half of the inning as they loaded the bases with no outs. Chestnut Hill took the opener with a walk-off grand slam to win 9-8.
In the nightcap, Caldwell was limited to two hits in the game, both by Putney. One of his hits came in the fourth inning as he singled home Brunson with the lone Cougar run of game two.
The Cougars travel to Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC twin bill on Saturday, April 17 at noon.
