WILMINGTON, Del.- The Caldwell University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Wilmington University. The Cougars fell short in the opener 4-2 and won the nightcap 6-4.
The Cougars move to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while the Wildcats stand at 4-2 and 4-2 in conference play.
Caldwell got on the board in the third inning as senior
Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) drove in the first run of the game with a single. Senior
Paige Sandoval (Alisa Viejo, Calif.) added a run scoring single in the inning to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
Wilmington got a run in their half of the third and took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead 4-2.
Junior pitcher
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) took the loss, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts to fall to 1-1.
In the nightcap, the teams traded runs in the opening inning. Junior
Chloe VanGorder (Harveys Lake, Pa.) drove in a run with a single to give the Cougars the early lead. The Wildcats answered in their half of the inning to even the score at 1-1. Wilmington took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third inning.
Caldwell pulled even in the fourth as freshman
Valerie Joaquin (Long Beach, Calif.) tied the game with a run scoring single. The Cougars pulled ahead in the fifth inning as they scored three runs. VanGorder put the Cougars ahead with a two-run single in the inning. Caldwell added a run in the inning to push ahead 5-2.
Wilmington closed the game to 5-4 with two runs in the fifth. Caldwell tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on a Wildcats error.
Junior
Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) tossed a complete game to earn her second win of the season. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four.
The Cougars host Nyack College in a CACC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 6 at 2:30 pm.
