CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University women's basketball junior
Rebecca Morrison (Ayrshire, Scotland) dropped in 19 points as the Cougars fell to Dominican College 64-56 in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener.
The Cougars fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the CACC, while the Chargers improve to 6-2 and 1-0 in conference play.
Caldwell got off to a fast start as they scored the first six points of the game. The Chargers answered as they pulled ahead 24-16 early in the second quarter.
The Cougars battled back and closed the half strong. Junior
Halle Brown (Downingtown, Pa.) drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to put the Cougars ahead 32-31 at halftime.
Dominican retook the lead early in the second half as they jumped in front 38-36 at the 7:34 mark. The Cougars rallied with nine straight points as junior
Casey O'Shaughnessy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) connected on a pair of free throws. Morrison added seven points including a trifecta at the 3:32 mark to give Caldwell their largest lead of the game at 45-38.
The Chargers battled back to pull even at 48 at the close of the third quarter. The teams traded points to start the final quarter with the Chargers eventually taking a four-point late in the game and connecting on four free throws in the final minute to hold off the Cougars.
Morrison led the way with 19 points and four rebounds, while Brown connected on four three-pointers to finish with 14 points and three boards. O'Shaughnessy added 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. Graduate
Saundra Cleckley (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) totaled seven points, 10 boards, four assists and three steals, while senior
Paula Dits (Alicante, Spain) tallied six points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Cougars host the College of Staten Island in a non-conference contest on Saturday, December 4 at 1 pm.
