WEST CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University sprint football junior
Frank DeMaio (Nutley, N.J.) tossed two touchdowns as the Cougars defeated Alderson Broaddus University 41-7 to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Cougars improve to 4-0 overall, while the Battlers drop to 0-5. Caldwell is off their best start in program history and had recorded the most wins since the program started in 2017.
Caldwell got on the board early with three touchdowns in the opening quarter. The Cougar defense recorded their first interception of the day to set up their first score as senior
Carl Watson (Newark, N.J.) rushed into the end zone from one-yard out.
DeMaio connected on a 43-yard scoring play to freshman
Akhi Barksdale (Brick, N.J.) to extend their lead to 13-0. Freshman
Justin Schmidt (Budd Lake, N.J.) added a one-yard score on the ground for a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.
Caldwell added to their lead as sophomore
Rahmeir McGraw (Prospect Park, N.J.) scored from two yards out. The scoring drive was set up by a DeMaio to junior
Jeremy Colon (Union City, N.J.) 58-yard pass play to set up McGraw. DeMaio and Barksdale hooked up again for a 5-yard touchdown strike to close out the first half scoring.
McGraw scored his second touchdown of the day with a seven yard to cap a 14-play, 93-yard drive early in the fourth quarter.
DeMaio completed 6-of-10 in the air for 139 and two touchdowns. Watson finished with nine carries and 36 yards on the ground and one score. McGraw added 70 rushing yards and two scores on 10 carries, while Schmidt finished with 70 yards on the ground on 14 carries and one score. Colon led the receivers with one catch for 58 yards, while Barksdale hauled in two receptions for 48 yards and two scores.
Freshman
Andrew Conklin (Long Branch, N.J.) led the Caldwell defense with six total tackles. The Cougar defense held the Battlers to 123 yards of total offense on the day.
The Cougars travel to the University of Pennsylvania for a Collegiate Sprint Football League match-up on Friday, October 22 at 7 pm.
