CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University men's basketball senior
Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) tallied to career-high 29 points to help lead the Cougars past Goldey-Beacom College 91-73 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.
The Cougars improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CACC, while the Lightning fall to 6-7 and 3-1 in conference play.
The teams battled through a competitive first half as Caldwell pulled ahead 28-23 with 6:28 left in the half. Goldey-Beacom scored six straight points to pull ahead by one-point less than a minute later. The Cougars answered with seven unanswered points as senior
AJ Kittles (Glassboro, N.J.) and Covington scored, while freshman
Gabe Johnson (Bloomfield, N.J.) converted a three-point play for a 35-29 lead.
The Lightning pulled even at 35 with 2:27 to play but the Cougars used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 42-40 at halftime.
Caldwell pulled away to start the second half as they used a 17-5 run to take a double-digit lead. Covington drained a pair triples, totaling 10 points in the run. Senior
Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) capped the run with a bucket at the 14:54 mark to give Caldwell a 59-45 lead. The Cougars maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Covington drained all 16 free throws as he finished with a career-high 29 points along with six boards, three assists and four steals. Senior
Ned Ogoemesim (Westampton, N.J.) added 15 points and four rebounds, while junior
Manley Dorme (Nanuet, N.Y.) totaled 12 points and five rebounds.
The Cougars host Concordia College for a CACC contest on Wednesday, January 8 at 7:30 pm.
