PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Caldwell University men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 in double overtime to Chestnut Hill College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action
The Cougars fall to 0-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the CACC, while the Griffins improve to 3-2-1 and 2-1-0 in conference play.
Caldwell struck first as junior
Mattia Cella (Rapallo, Italy) put the Cougars on the board for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.
The Griffins took the lead with a pair of goals in the fifth and tenth minute of the game to push ahead 2-1.
Chestnut Hill extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 35
th minute of play. Freshman
Andre Vieira (Union, N.J.) tacked on a goal for the Cougars in the 38
th minute to close the gap to 3-2 at halftime.
The Griffins added to their lead in the second half with a goal in the 55
th minute for a 4-2 lead.
Caldwell battled back as Vieira netted his second goal of the game off an assist from junior
Jeongmin Ahn (Sejong, South Korea) in the 66
th minute. The Cougars pulled even in the 79
th minute of play as freshman
Kalleb Braga (Belleville, N.J.) tied the game off an assist from sophomore
Andrea Rizzi (Aosta, Italy).
The game headed to overtime with both teams failing to net a goal in the first extra period. Chestnut Hill broke through with the game-winner with 29 seconds left in the second overtime.
Junior keeper
Nils Svere (Lier, Norway) recorded 11 saves in the game.
The Cougars host Georgian Court University in a CACC contest on Saturday, October 5 at 1:30 pm.
