LITTLE FERRY, N.J.- The Caldwell University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College on Tuesday. The Bears won the opener 11-4, while the Cougars won the nightcap 7-2.
The Cougars fall to 8-19 overall and 6-12 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 15-13 and 13-5 in conference play.
Bloomfield took the early lead in the opener with four runs in the first inning. Caldwell got on the board in the second inning as junior
Joseph Mitchell (Bogota, N.J.) and junior
Dylan Walicky (Belleville, N.J.) singled with one out. Junior
Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) and junior
Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.) followed with back-to-back run scoring singles to cut the score to 4-2.
The Bears pulled ahead 8-2 with a run in the second and three in the third. Senior
Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.) drove in a run with a single in the fifth inning. Brunson connected on a solo homerun in the sixth for the Cougars.
Junior
Nick Cerbone (Bayonne, N.J.) tossed three innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Junior
Tom Disch (Branchburg, N.J.) pitched five innings in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Caldwell got four runs in the second inning of the nightcap as senior
Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led off with a walk. Mitchell singled, while Zosulis drove in both runners with a single. Brunson singled and junior
Dhillion Barbetti (West Long Branch, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior
Luis Rullan (Bloomfield, N.J.) singled to drive in one run, while Parente drew a walk to force in a run.
Bloomfield got a run in their half of the second but the Cougars added a run in the fourth with a run scoring single. Brunson added a two-run single in the seventh inning as the Cougars earned a split.
Freshman
Jerry Gamone (Union, N.J.) tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts to improve to 2-4.
The Cougars and Bears wrap up their season series at the Kiwanis Oval on Friday, April 12 at noon.
