Softball Falls to Regionally Ranked New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn.- The Caldwell University softball team fell in a non-conference twin bill to the University of New Haven. The Cougars are ranked #6 in the latest NCAA Division II East Region poll, while the Chargers are in eighth place.
 
The Chargers took the opener 3-2 and edged the Cougars in the nightcap 2-1.
 
The Cougars fall to 29-21 overall, while the Chargers improve to 30-13.
 
In the opener, New Haven took the early lead with one run in the first and one run in the second.
 
Caldwell rallied back in the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out. Junior Daniela Solis (Wilmington, Del.) led off with a walk, while sophomores Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) singled with one out. Sophomore Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) grounded out to drive in one run, while junior Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.) singled to tie the game at two.
 
The Chargers answered in their half of the inning with a run and held on for the win.
 
Junior Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts to fall to 14-8.
 
In the nightcap, the Chargers took the early lead with two runs in the first inning. Caldwell got their run in the fifth as Solis drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman Nora Conway (Chicago, Ill.) singled and Solis scored on an error on the play.
 
Freshman Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) took the loss to fall to 13-12. She tossed a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
 
The Cougars conclude conference play as they host the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference twin bill on Saturday, April 27 at 1 pm. The Cougars will honor their lone senior on Saturday. Prior to the game, the Caldwell Athletics Department will recognize their CACC Hall of Famer Corinne Reiser Houser.
