CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University softball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against the University of Sciences on senior day. The Cougars won the opener 12-0 in five innings and won the nightcap 2-0.
Caldwell finishes the regular season in third place in the CACC and will compete in the CACC Championship beginning on Thursday hosted at Georgian Court University as part of the CACC
Spring Festival.
The Cougars improve to 31-19 overall and finish the regular season at 20-6 in the CACC. The Devils end their season at 9-33 and 7-19 in conference play.
In the opener, the Cougars got on the board in the opening inning as freshman
Nora Conway (Chicago, Ill.) led off with a walk, stole second and second on a double by sophomore
Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). In the second, freshman
Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) singled with one out and scored on a triple by junior
Daniela Solis (Wilmington, Del.). Freshman
Sara Raubertas (Berlin, N.J.) scored Solis on a sacrifice.
Caldwell broke the game open in the third as Sandoval led off with a double and scored on a single by sophomore
Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Junior
Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.) singled, while sophomore
Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) hit a three-run homerun. The Cougars added three more runs as Conway drew a bases loaded walk and Sandoval tripled in two runs.
The Cougars added two runs in the fourth on a Solis run scoring single and a Raubertas sacrifice fly.
Junior
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits with nine strikeouts to improve to 15-8. Freshman
Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless fifth inning, allowing one hit.
In the nightcap, Caldwell got on the board in the first inning. Conway led off with an infield single and scored on a triple by sophomore
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The Cougars added a run in the sixth inning as they took advantage of an error.
Freshman
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) struck out five to improve to 14-12. She scattered five hits in a complete game effort.
The Cougars locked up the #3 seed in the upcoming CACC Championships, which begins on Thursday, May 2. The final match-ups will be determined based on the remaining regular season results from around the league.
