CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University softball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College. The Cougars won the opener 10-8 and took the nightcap 12-4.
The Cougars improve to 29-19 overall and 18-6 in the CACC, while the Bears drop to 11-26 and 8-16 in conference play.
In the opener, Bloomfield got on the board with a run in the second inning. Caldwell took the lead in the third with two runs. The Cougars loaded the bases as freshman
Nora Conway (Chicago, Ill.) reached on an error, while sophomore
Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) singled and sophomore
Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Junior
Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.) singled in a run to tie the game, while sophomore
Anyssia Ramirez (Brentwood, Calif.) drew a walk to force in a run.
The Cougars loaded the bases again in the fourth inning as they scored eight runs in the inning. Sophomore
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Cain singled in a run with a second run scoring on an error. Freshman
Lauren Stansell (Plantation, Fla.) drove in a run with a single, while Conway had a three-run triple in the inning.
Bloomfield closed the gap over their final four at-bats including scoring four runs in the seventh but fell short.
Junior
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) improved to 14-7 overall as she tossed five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Cougars scored five runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Sandoval singled to score a run, while Misiur added a run scoring base hit. Senior
Carly Testa (Sicklerville, N.J.) added a two-run single with another run scoring later in the inning on an error.
Testa added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, while Conway stole home in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. The Cougars added five runs in the seventh as freshman
Sara Raubertas (Berlin, N.J.) drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Conway singled to score two runs, while Sandoval added a run scoring single. Rodriguez drove in a run with a ground out.
Freshman
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
The Cougars travel to regionally ranked University of New Haven on Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
