Rullan, Mejia Each Knock in Four Runs as Baseball Sweeps Concordia

CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University baseball freshman Alejandro Mejia (Naples, Fla.) and junior Luis Rullan (Bloomfield, N.J.) each drove in four runs as the Cougars swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Concordia College.
 
The Cougars improve to 13-24 overall and 11-17 in the CACC, while the Clippers drop to 11-32 and 6-22 in conference play.
 
In the opener, Concordia scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Caldwell battled back in the fifth as the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs. Junior Dylan Walicky (Belleville, N.J.) doubled, while junior Jack Zosulis (East Windsor, N.J.) singled. Freshman Frank Lehmann (Colonia, N.J.) drew a walk to load the bases. Mejia followed with a single to cut the score to 4-2.
 
The Clippers added two runs in the sixth but the Cougars rallied back in their half of the inning. Caldwell loaded the bases as seniors Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.) and Mason Marino (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled, while junior Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.) drew a walk. Walicky walked to force in a run, while Rullan drove in two runs with a single. Lehmann tied the game with a single, while Mejia drove in a run to put Caldwell ahead 7-6.
 
Concordia tied the game with a run in the seventh. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the inning as Zosulis drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Rullan tripled in a run for a 9-7 lead. The Cougars added two runs in the eighth on a Parente sacrifice bunt. Red-shirt freshman Mike Airey (Millville, N.J.) added a run scoring single.
 
Senior Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) earned the win in relief as he tossed three innings, allowing one run on three hits.
 
In the nightcap, Concordia took the lead with a run in the first inning. The Cougars answered in the second as freshman Jalen March (Baltimore, Md.) led off with a walk. Zosulis singled, while March scored on a double steal attempt. Rullan added a sacrifice fly later in the inning for a 2-1 lead.
 
The Cougars added a run in the fourth as Lehmann drew a two-out walk. He stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Mejia singled, stole second and moved to third on an error. Parente singled to drive in a run for a 4-1 lead.
 
Caldwell tacked on six runs in the sixth as Lehmann and Mejia both had run scoring singles in the inning. The Cougars took advantage of two errors in the inning to scored two runs, while Zosulis posted an RBI ground out.
 
Freshman Jerry Gamone (Union, N.J.) tossed four innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts to improve to 3-5.
 
The Cougars hits the road to take on the Clippers to wrap up their four-game series on Thursday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
