NYACK, N.Y.- Caldwell University women's lacrosse junior
Arden Kassaleh (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and sophomore
Samantha Murphy (Pompton Plains, N.J.) each netted six goals as the Cougars defeated Nyack College 21-15 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars improve to 4-10 overall and 3-4 in the CACC, while the Warriors drop to 5-11 and 3-5 in conference play.
Nyack took the early lead with three straight goals to start the game. Sophomore
Jules Wesler (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) netted the first Caldwell goal of the game at the 21:32 mark. Senior
Jessica Collum (Wayne, N.J.) and Kassaleh added goals to even the score at three. Freshman
Emily Lasko (Jackson, N.J.) recorded assists on all three goals and put the Cougars in front with a tally at the 10:46 mark.
The Cougars added to their lead as Kassaleh posted three more first half goals, while senior
Rachel Lucia (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and Murphy each netted two goals each over the final ten minutes of the half. Freshman
Jenna Steelman (Mays Landing, N.J.) netted one goal late in the half to help Caldwell build a 12-5 halftime lead.
Nyack closed the gap to 12-7 with a pair of goals to start the second half. The teams traded goals as Steelman, Collum and Murphy netted goals to push the score to 15-8.
The Warriors tacked on a goal to cut the score to 15-9 but the Cougars answered with five of the next six goals. Kassaleh scored twice, while Lucia added one in the run. Murphy netted a pair of goals including one at the 8:00 mark to extend the lead to 20-10.
Nyack added five goals down the stretch, while Murphy added one in the final two minutes for the Cougars.
Freshman
Mia Monacelli (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded 14 saves in the win.
Kassaleh led the Cougars with six goals, three assists, six draw controls and two ground balls. Murphy tallied six goals, seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Lasko posted one goal and four assists, while Steelman finished with two goals and three assists. Lucia totaled three goals, one assist and three ground balls. Collum added two goals, five draw controls, three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Cougars travel to Chestnut Hill College for a CACC contest on Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m.
