CALDWELL, N.J.- Caldwell University baseball junior
Michael Calabrese (Toms River, N.J.) blasted the go-ahead homerun in the opener as the Cougars split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Jefferson. Caldwell won the opener 3-2 but the Rams took the nightcap 1-0 in eight innings.

The Cougars move to 11-24 overall and 9-17 in the CACC, while the Rams stand at 15-26 and 13-13 in conference play.

In the opener, the score remained tied until both teams got on the board in the sixth inning. Jefferson got two runs in the inning on a two-run two-out single to take a 2-0 lead.

Caldwell battled back in the bottom of the inning as freshman
Alejandro Mejia (Naples, Fla.) singled with one out. Mejia stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior
Anthony Parente (Jackson, N.J.) singled to score Mejia to cut the score to 2-1. Calabrese followed with a go-ahead two-run homerun to put Caldwell in front 3-2.

Tom Disch (Branchburg, N.J.) earned the win, as he tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts to improve to 1-1. Senior
Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out two to earn his second save of the season.

In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless through seven innings. The Rams pushed across a run in the eighth to take the lead. Caldwell loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but could not plate the tying run.

Freshman
Jerry Gamone (Union, N.J.) tossed five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. Junior
Michael Hess (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) took the loss as he pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out three. Frascati toss 2/3 of an inning, allowing one hit.
