CLERMONT, Fla.- The Caldwell University softball team lost a pair of games as the Cougars continued their Florida spring break trip on Saturday. Caldwell fell to #17 Wayne St. University 7-1 and were edged by Le Moyne College 2-1.
The Cougars fall to 2-8 to start the season, while the nationally ranked Warriors improve to 16-4 and the Dolphins up their record to 8-9.
In their opening game against Wayne St., the Warriors got two runs in the opening inning to take an early lead.
Caldwell got their run in the third as junior
Daniela Solis (Wilmington, Del.) led off with a double. Solis moved to third on a ground out and scored later in the inning on an error.
Wayne St. added three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to extend to a 7-1 lead.
Junior
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) took the loss as she tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Junior
Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) came on in relief for the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Caldwell took the early lead against Le Moyne as freshman
Nora Conway (Chicago, Ill.) doubled to lead off the first inning. Conway moved to third on a ground and scored later in the inning.
The Dolphins took the lead in the sixth as they capitalized on two Caldwell errors to take a 2-1 lead.
Freshman
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) tossed a complete game, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts to fall to 0-5.
The Cougars conclude their Florida trip on Sunday, March 17 as they face American International College at 9:00 a.m. and University of Minnesota Crookston at 11:15 a.m. at the National Training Center's Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida.
