CLERMONT, Fla.- The Caldwell University softball team split a pair of games as the Cougars continued their Florida spring break trip on Friday. The Cougars defeated NYIT 4-0 before falling to Northwood University 10-1 in five innings.
 
The Cougars move to 2-6 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-5 and the Timberwolves improve to 7-8.
 
In the opening game against NYIT, the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning. Junior
 Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) drew a one-out walk, while sophomore 
Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) singled. Sophomore 
Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y.) blasted a three-run homerun to give the Cougars the lead.
 
Caldwell added a run later in the inning as junior 
Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif.) doubled. Junior 
Christina Misiur (Sayreville, N.J.) singled to score Johnston for a 4-0 lead.
 
Junior 
Sara Bearden (Ewing, N.J.) tossed a complete game six-hit shutout, striking out two to improve to 2-1.
 
In the second game of the game, Northwood took the lead with a run in the second inning. Caldwell tied the game in the third as freshman 
Sara Raubertas (Berlin, N.J.) led off with a single. Raubertas moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Rodriguez single.
 
The Timberwolves retook the lead in the fourth with a nine-run inning.
 
Freshman 
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. Johnston tossed 2/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on five hits, while freshman 
Kayla Daly (Babylon, N.Y.) retired the lone batter she faced.
 
The Cougars continue their Florida trip on Saturday, March 16 as they face Wayne State University at 9:00 a.m. and Le Moyne College at 11:15 a.m. at the National Training Center's Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Florida.
